Have you ever been sitting at work wondering where the 8 hour workday started? What the history behind it is? If you want more history behind it, then take a look here.
That’s now what I want to talk about though. I want to talk about Parkinsons Law. Heard of it? If not, I’m sure you’ve experienced it.
You’ve been to work the past month and one of those days had a few tasks that seemed to take up the entire day even though you’ve done those same types of tasks in a pre-determined time period, right? You’ve just experienced Parkinsons Law. It basically says that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. If you give yourself 3 hours to complete a task that has taken you 2 hours previously, it will take you 3 hours to do.
If you give yourself one week to finish a project that is a three day project, you’ll take one week to do it.
Now apply all of that to the traditional 8 hour work day / 40 hour workweek…. how many of those hours are really necessary? Could you get the same amount done in 6 hours a day? 4 hours?
Do you believe this “law?” Have you ever had this happen to you?
